Date/Time/Place: Tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, June 20th, 2018, 5:30 – 8:30pm, at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, United States. The forum will be held during the co-located manufacturing conferences: the ASME 2018 International Conference on Manufacturing Science and Engineering (MSEC2018) and NAMRI/SME 46th North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC46).

Purpose: The goal of this forum is to provide current students at all levels of graduate and undergraduate programs as well as recent graduates with better information/knowledge of various research positions in industry, academia, and national laboratories. The forum will further discuss how to be successful professionally in the various research settings.

Tentative Agenda (Wednesday, June 20th, 2018)

17:30 – 17:45: Opening Remarks and Welcome
17:45 – 18:30: 5-minute spoken introduction by each panelist (9 panelists)
18:30 – 18:45: Pizza and beverages served
18:45 – 20:00: Breakout panel discussions
  Panel 1: Academia
Panel 2: Government
Panel 3: Industry
20:00 – 20:30: Wrap-up discussion, open questions and answers

Forum Format

  • The forum will start with introducing the panelists from each of academic, government, and industrial sectors. Each panelist will introduce themselves in approximately 5 minutes each.
  • 3 Breakout round-table panels (parallel) will follow: one for academia, one for government and the other for industry. The round-table panels will each have 3 panelists from diverse background/positions. Panelists will discuss such topics as how to search for a job, career management, funding for research, etc.
  • Food and beverages will be served during the forum.
  • After the forum participants are encouraged to engage in conversations/discussions related to their particular/personal interests.

Fee: Free for registered conference participants

Attendance

  • Open to all registered conference participants
  • Mandatory for NSF Travel Grant* student applicants
    * Any student enrolled full-time at a U.S. college or university is eligible to apply for an NSF Travel Grant.
