Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul in the light of Digitalization

As any other type of machinery, thermal turbomachines such as gas turbines, aircraft engines, steam turbines, blowers and turbochargers to name a few are subject to wear and deterioration during their lifetime. Worn components may easily lead to disrupted service of the machinery having a major impact on the service provided and costs. Planning the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) of such machinery thoroughly, be it by means of predictive maintenance on the basis of service experience and calibrated models or by means of preventive maintenance on the basis of real-time monitoring data, allows operators to ensure continuous and reliable operation as well as to reduce operating costs significantly. The current advances in digitalization, often referred to as "big data", ranging from the acquisition and creation of digital replicas of individual real machines over the reliable acquisition of real-time monitoring data to advanced data mining open up a new field of application for numerical analyses. The degree of sophistication reached by state-of-the-art simulation tools paired with the computational power of modern computers allows analyzing such digital replicas at a high level of details such that previously insufficiently understood phenomena now can be investigated in a much more accurate manner. By properly understanding relevant phenomena including their consequences on operation, preventive MRO can be scheduled "at the right time" while also specifying precise MRO measures. Furthermore, the technology of Additive Manufacturing is currently revolutionizing component manufacturing and repair. Using this technology, worn components can often be repaired rather than replaced and in the best case event exceed operating condition standards.

Dr. Zuo Zhi Zhao is currently Chief Technology Officer in the Power & Gas division at Siemens. He joined the company in 2009 at its Chinese hub in Shanghai as Program Manager of Gas Turbine Technology Development and held the positions of Engineering Manager of Gas Turbine Shanghai Engineering Hub, General Manager of Gas Turbine Business Operation and General Manager of Gas Turbine Business Unit. Previously he was a Project Leader on aircraft engine research and development at GE Global Research in Niskayuna, NY, USA.

Dr. Zuo Zhi Zhao

Mr. Russell Irving is currently Digital Twin General Manager & Chief Engineer at GE Global Research. In this capacity, he oversees the development of Digital Twin technology, which is one of GE’s newest products. Previous to this Russell was Services Technology Leader and Chief Engineer at GE Global Research being responsible for service technology projects that spanned inspection, repair, sensing systems, monitoring, diagnostics, prognostics, and lifing. He shaped the vision and roadmap for service technology capabilities in the company by analyzing the competitive landscape and communicating its implications for the businesses.
